About Smoke Radio

Smoke Radio won the 2015 Best Station Award at the Student Radio Awards, on 5 November at the indigo at The O2. So we’re officially The Best Student Radio Station in the whole of the UK!

We are the student station of the University of Westminster and have been on air since 2004. The station is based at the School of Media, Arts and Design in Harrow but we do love to venture out across London (including to our Cavendish campus studio!) when we can.

The station broadcasts 24 hours a day online with daytime content starting from 9am through to 5pm, followed by an eclectic variety of specialist music and speech programming into the early hours of the morning.

Smoke Radio is run by a team of volunteer committee members, who are selected yearly in the spring.

This year we have huge footsteps to follow! Winning Best Station is something we have aimed for since the station first starting broadcasting. We want to keep a close contact with our alumni, host huge events to bring all the campuses together and make the most of our facilities by becoming more multiplatform than ever!

Smoke Radio was established in 2004 by students Jim Haddow, Tim Pryor, Sam Gregory and Mark Jackson alongside help from other students and staff members including Director of Undergrad Media and Head Radio Lecturer, Dr. Matthew Linfoot.

We began broadcasting 24/7 in 2005.

The station’s on air branding has been voiced by students, of particular note, ex-Westminster student and current BBC Radio 1Xtra presenter, Nick Bright.

Smoke Radio is part of the Student Radio Association and regularly sends students to its national conference as well as entering the Student Radio Awards each year.
