You can contact Smoke Media’s team of student editors and leaders here. We’re all volunteers, so it may take us a day or so to reply. You can also get in touch with us on Facebook and Twitter. We’ve collected answers to common questions below.

You’ve got questions? We’ve got answers.
How do I join?
You can sign up to our mailing lists online, and you can also join the Facebook member groups for the QH, Smoke Mag and Smoke TV. You’ll see all our opportunities. We have occasional member meetings at the beginnings of every semester, along with our annual Annual General Meetings (AGMs), where the next committee are selected.
How much does it cost?
Membership in Smoke Media is absolutely free and always will be.
When’s the next meeting on my campus?
Smoke operate on all University of Westminster campuses. We’d tire ourselves out having meetings on every campus, so you’ll need to travel to other campuses for some meetings. For our most important meetings, we may hold one in Harrow and one on a central London campus.
Do I need experience?
No experience or special skills are needed to get involved with Smoke. However, you get out what you put in, so we will expect a degree of time and dedication from you. If you commit to a deadline for writing an article, for instance, we expect you to stick by it.
Do I have to be studying media?
Absolutely not. Those from non-media courses are particularly welcomed! Smoke Media is a great way to make friends and build transferable skills (teamwork, project management, IT) even if you don’t have your heart set on a career in the media.
What if I’ve graduated?
Usually, members need to be current University of Westminster students. Alumni are welcome to get in touch if you think you have something special to contribute.
Where are you based?
All over! Our main office is the Media Hub, on the ground floor of Cavendish campus, next to the SU Shop. We also have a radio studio on the Forum up at Harrow campus.
What about socials?
We have regular alcoholic and non-alcoholic socials after our meetings.
How do I pitch something?
You can email an editor directly or send a general enquiry. Editors plan content for the printed editions well in advance, so we can’t guarantee your piece will appear in print, but try to publish as much as we can online.
Can you help me get into an event as press?
Get in touch with us and we’ll see. If you have an event in mind that will appeal to our audience and can convince one of our editors, the odds are good.
How do I get a show?
We let members sign up to present regular shows at the start of every semester. If you’ve missed this semester’s sign-up, don’t worry. You can always get in touch with the heads of daytime and specialist to enquire about any vacant slots.
You can learn more about Smoke Radio in particular here.
What training do you offer?
Our in-house training is conducted by UWSU staff under the name Smoke Academy. You can learn from video tutorials, blog posts and group training sessions. The student media coordinator is always on hand to offer advice and assistance as needed. That said, the best way to learn is on the job, and we are more than happy to teach you as we go along.
