“Her Body, her choice” – Kylie Jenner’s pregnancy
News broke out recently about the youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner family being pregnant. Kylie, 20, is said to be expecting with her boyfriend, Travis Scott, 25. Naturally, memes about it started getting viral almost at the same pace the news were. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the issue, as she is only 20 years old and has been with Scott for a few months after ending her 3-year relationship with rapper Tyga earlier this year.
The Kardashians are possibly the most famous family in the world. You either want to be them, with them, or hate them. As young as she is, Kylie already has her own TV show and her own makeup brand, both very successful amongst young women all over the world. She also has a strong social media influence, a product of her family’s, and her own, success.
Yet, that means she is constantly under scrutiny from followers and the media. If she showed too much, if it was too sexual, if she hasn’t posted in a while, who she’s seen with, if her lips are natural, etc. So when reports started floating around about her being pregnant, theories started blooming about who was the father and her use (or non-use) of contraception.
She is a role model for many, and in modern society being pregnant at 20 means you were not ‘careful enough’ while having sex. Some may even say that is why people should wait until marriage to have sex as a kid should be brought up into the world in an established loving family.
I don’t follow that philosophy. And it is my choice to do so. As was her choice to have sex however she wanted with whomever she wanted. As is her choice to decide what to do with her body. Whether she was actively seeking to get pregnant, or not, she made her own choices. And she should be honest about them.
Let her be a mum. Being 20 and in a new relationship doesn’t mean she can’t. Yes, she is young. But it is her decision to bring a kid into her life at this very moment. Her relationship with Scott may not last, or they might get married and live as a happy family in LA, if that is even possible. She has a responsibility to those who look up to her, but she also has a responsibility to herself.
